FREE Windows Applications

In these tough times, everyone is pinching nickels (I know it’s pennies but come on, it’s inflation already) and trying to get by doing as much as possible without spending much. When it comes to your computer, this could be very limiting. Software isn’t cheap. Yet, your computer needs a variety of software in order to do the tasks that you would like to perform. Below is a list of applications that don’t cost anything and may even save you money!!!

Paint.NET
Paint.NET is a free application that replaces the Windows Paint program. It requires .NET Framework 2.0, but that’s already included with Windows Vista. For those that are on Windows XP, check out the article on how to download the .NET Framework here. It’s a very simple image editing program that is very useful.

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack
If you like to download videos and you don’t want to end up with malware, K-Lite Mega Codec Pack plus QuickTime Alternative is for you. Why you say? Simple, it’s all about the codecs. What is a codec? "Codec" is a technical name for "compression/decompression". It also stands for "compressor/decompressor" and "code/decode". All of these variations mean the same thing: a codec is a computer program that both shrinks large movie files, and makes them playable on your computer. Codec programs are required for your media player to play your downloaded music and movies. K-Lite Mega Codec Pack pretty much carrys every conceivable codec you would need to download music and video. But, understand, downloading videos, especially from questionable sources, can put your computer at risk to malware, viruses, and trojans. If you load K-Lite Mega Codec Pack and the video you download says you do not have the correct codecs, stop it and leave. Delete the file immediately and DO NOT try running it. Installing these additional ‘special’ codecs just allows the malware hackers access to your computer.

CCleaner
CCleaner stands for Crap Cleaner. No kidding. I didn’t make this up. It is designed to read through your computer registry and temp file and remove “junk” that simply does not belong. You will be surprised at the stuff it finds. One note though, the installation comes bundled with Web toolbars, so make sure to uncheck the option if you don’t want them.

uTorrent
uTorrent is the BitTorrent client that is a must-have for anyone who wants a good and effective file-sharing program. uTorrent is able to download large files and was developed by an old-school programmer, Ludvig Strigeus.

Infra recorder
If you currently don’t have a program for burning CDs or DVDs, then here is a free application for you. It may not have all the functionality some of the commercial programs have, but it does what you want it to do, burn CDs or DVDs. Furthermore, Infra recorder does not come with bloated features and applications that you may never use either.

FastStone Photo Resizer
For a killer program that deals with images, this ones for you. This program can resize images in batches, rename and convert them to all types of formats and sizes. Great for fitting photos in your cell phone! It installs simply and quickly. For those of you the like to upload photos to Facebook, this program may be just what you need to speed things up!

AVG Antivirus Free Edition
Every computer should have an Antivirus software program. They can cost from $49-$80 and you have to pay again to renew each year. Not anymore. With AVG’s Free Edition you get a small, compact program that does not slow down your system and takes out viruses and trojans BEFORE they become a problem on your system. And the best thing about it is it’s FREE!!!!!

OpenOffice
So some of you would like to be able to run a word processor, or build a spreadsheet, or even create a PowerPoint presentation, but can’t afford to buy Microsoft Office. That’s OK. OpenOffice is an open source product that is compatible with Microsoft Office. It has most of Offices’ features (the word processor can save documents in Word format, spreadsheet in Excel, etc.) and has a big support group behind it. But most of all, again it’s FREE!!!

Skype
This is my personal favorite. If you have a broadband connection like cable modem or DSL, Skype is a killer program that allows you to connect with other users, much like instant messenger, or AIM, but BETTER! As a free version, it allows you to place ‘calls’ to other users that have Skype anywhere in the world for free. Add a web cam and you can place a video call. Skype does have a pay edition that very affordable which allows you to place unlimited calls within the U.S. for about $3 a month and it’s verify affordable. I use it a lot and save money….

So there you have it. Applications that are free and helpful that allow you to place some of those nickels in the piggy bank. If you have any suggestions or ideas, please email us and let us know.
